The World's First Shark Detection Buoy

A product with the potential to change beach safety forever.
share

Optus is incredibly excited about this project, because it does have the potential to change beach safety forever.

—Nathan Rosenberg

The Australian Communications company, Optus, has partnered with Shark Mitigation Systems, to test and launch the world's first shark detection buoy. It was initially tested at the Sydney Aquarium, then in the ocean off Abrolhos Islands and Port Stephens.

The buoy uses sonar to detect the unique signature made by a moving shark, and then sends a message to the life guard at the beach, so that swimmers can be warned. The message is sent using Optus communications technology.

The creators seek to find a way to save swimmers from shark accidents in the ocean they love, without the need to kill more sharks.

Unlike other shark protection schemes, this one does not depend on zapping the shark with electronic currents or fields. The creators hope to put Clever Buoy on beaches around the globe.
